Before you sign up, take a moment to consider if it is really for you.

A clue comes in the name, social media; these sites help you keep up with friends and family and get in touch with others who share your interests. In the main, people using social media don't respond well to hard commercial messages and it's easy to damage your reputation with an ill-considered "tweet". Some businesses (for example nightclubs) can, and do, attract a social following and keeping those "followers" up to date using social media is a natural and useful progression.

Think of communicating via social media as akin to chatting to a group of people. If you know what you're talking about (you should do – it's your business!) and you're pleasant and approachable, you'll be a hit. Start a hard sell approach and you can expect to get the online version of custard pie in the face!


If it's done well, blogging can be a very effective way of promoting your business and services while driving traffic to your website and interacting with social media. Blogging can help your SEO efforts and provides an effective way of getting your message out.

A blog is, essentially, a less formal addition to your website where you can post about the latest business news, tips and tricks, special offers or anything you want. It shouldn't be an onerous task to maintain a blog but regular, brief updates are wise (or things get stale).

However, blogging is not for everyone. You do need to put some time into maintaining a blog and it needs to be interesting. A poorly maintained blog is a depressing thing that isn't going to do anything for you. A vibrant, well-run blog will attract followers and keep them interested.

Don't let anyone sell you an email list for marketing purposes. Using such a list is a pretty good way to be tarred as a spammer and end up on a blacklist. Once you're on a blacklist, you'll have a hard time getting yourself removed and it can have a serious impact on your online business.
